International connections

International students coming to Australia

Our undergraduate courses provide an opportunity for students, particularly international students, seeking a creative and challenging course in an Australian university. Our courses combine creative practice with critical studies addressed to literary and popular cultural issues. Students mainly work with Australian creative practitioners, gaining first hand experience of writing and cultural practice.

Teaching methods combine lectures, tutorials and creative workshops in which students are able to present and discuss their own creative work. Students are encouraged to write from their own cultures and language perspectives, while participating in the diverse culture of the UTS classroom.

Australian students going overseas

Since the combined degree's inception, the Writing and Cultural Studies program has continued to attract students keen to pursue an international connection at the heart of their creative and critical studies.

The course offers a unique opportunity to study in a country of the student’s choice, exploring the language and the new cultural context during a period of residency overseas. Students are encouraged to bring this experience and the cultural influences encountered back into their practice as writers and thinkers.

The international component offers students the opportunity to rethink their work as Australian writers, critics and cultural researchers.

Staff with international expertise

Staff in the area also bring international expertise at the research level into their teaching. They are conducting research into Vietnamese and South East Asian cultures, into the cultures of the Indian Ocean and Madagascar, in British and European literary and media studies, into colonial and post-colonial histories of discovery, and into film studies associated with Hollywood, South East Asian and Indigenous cinema.

HSS International web site

A few of our Humanities and Social Sciences students run a separate web site for Australian students who are abroad and international students who spend their time in Sydney.

Combine your degree with international studies!

The Institute for International Studies offers the great opportunity to enhance your Writing and Cultural Studies degree with international studies! Many of our students make use of this possibility and travel abroad as part of their degree, to learn about language, culture, and of course also just for the experience.
