Study workloads and fees

Study workload

Your study workload at HSS besides the lectures and tutorials depends on the subject itself and on the assessment tasks that are required of you.

The credit point system at UTS describes each credit point to be equivalent to about 2 hours of study per week. Thus, with a full-time study load of usually 24 credit points per semester, you will need to prepare yourself for up to 48 hours of studies (that includes class times).

Of course, how much time you really need or want to commit is up to you, and often also up to the group (in case you have a group work assessment task). It will fluctuate strongly during the semester: usually, it becomes quite hectic before assignments are due, especially towards the end of each semester.

To get a better idea of how much work is required, go to our list of HSS subjects. When you click on one of the subjects, you will find a short description of what the subject is about. You can also see the number of credit points (cp). The higher the credit points, the more work you are expected to put into the subject. Most of our subjects also offer a link to a pdf document that will list in detail the assessments associated with the subject. Reading through these assessments will give you a good idea of the requirements of the subject in order to complete the subject successfully.
