Is there a midyear intake for HSS courses?
Most HSS postgraduate courses have a midyear intake. To confirm that the postgraduate course you are interested in has a midyear intake refer to the HSS List of Postgraduate Courses Offered for the coming semester.
HSS undergraduate courses currently have no mid year intake.
Is the course offered full-time/part-time?
All BA Communication degrees are offered as full-time courses only.
All HSS postgraduate courses may be studied part-time and many are offered as full-time courses
See online handbook for typical programs
See the summary of HSS postgraduate courses offered in Spring where it will be indicated whether a not a course is offered full-time and/or part-time.
Can I do a subject from another faculty?
Undergraduate students may select subjects from other faculties and from the Institute of International Studies (IIS) when choosing their elective subjects
Can I learn a language as part of my HSS course?
The Institute for International Studies (IIS) offers a wide range of Language and Culture subjects which are available to be studied as electives in any of our undergraduate degrees.
Students in the combined degrees with International Studies will study at least 32 credit points of Language and Culture subjects as a requirement of their degree.
HSS offers a Graduate Diploma in International Studies and a Master of Arts in International Studies where Language subjects are a compulsory component of the degree.
Is there a reading list that I can get started on before classes start?
Official reading lists for subjects will be advised on subject outlines given to enrolled students at the beginning of each semester by the subject coordinator.
The online handbook has detailed subject descriptions which may include reading lists, texts or references - it should be noted that these lists are subject to change and the official reading list is the one advised on the subject outline produced for the applicable semester and given to students in class.
How can I get a subject outline?
Subject outlines are given to students when they attend their first class
Any questions regarding subject outlines should be directed to the relevant subject coordinator
The Online Handbook provides very detailed subject descriptions for HSS subjects - these are NOT subject outlines but provide very useful information for students when deciding their subject choices
When can I get my assignment back?
Assignments submitted throughout the semester would normally be returned during class.
Final assignments will be posted back to you if you provide a stamped, self-addressed envelope. Otherwise, your assignment may be collected in week 4 of the following semester from Academic Programs and Support (Building 2, level 7). Assignments which remain uncollected after this time will be disposed of according to University guidelines.
Can I do a Media Arts and Production subject which is not part of my course?
Production subjects offered by the Media Arts and Production( MAP) area are available only to students admitted to MAP courses. That is why these subjects are not included in the elective option list for students studying in other areas. At the end of Spring, HSS students studying in other undergraduate areas may be invited to submit an application to study Media Arts and Production 1 (50247) as one of their electives for Autumn. Approval to undertake 50247 will be subject to class places remaining after new student enrolment is complete.
Can I do a Journalism subject which is not part of my course?
Professional subjects offered by the Journalism area are available only to students admitted to Journalism courses. That is why these subjects are not included in the elective option list for students studying in other areas. At the end of Spring, HSS students studying in other undergraduate areas may be invited to submit an application to study Journalism 1 (50234) as one of their electives for Autumn. Approval to undertake 50234 will be subject to class places remaining after new student enrolment is complete.
What subjects can be taken as electives?
If your course allows open electives, which is the case for students in the undergraduate BA Communication degrees, then HSS will allow you to select undergraduate subjects from across the university, including subjects offered by the Institute for International Studies (IIS).
To be able to enrol into cross-faculty electives you must meet any prerequisites put in place by the owning faculty.
HSS students should be aware that many subjects from other faculties are 6 credit point subjects and not 8credit points as offered by HSS. As it is not possible to graduate with any credit point shortfall enrolling into 6cp electives will normally require you to complete an additional subject.
A student may also be given permission to enrol into subjects at another tertiary institution and to have the subjects credited back to their UTS degree - please see information on Concurrent Study.
