Kais Al-momani: Socio-cultural interaction of Arab immigration groups with Australian host society (Jordanian migrants - case study)

Email: kais.Al-momani@uts.edu.au

My research attempts to shed light on the Jordanian groups that immigrated to Australia as a result of social problems and general population movement, as well as an overview of Arab migration to Australia. Furthermore, I will deal with the several hypotheses advanced on acculturation, or assimilation, as well as the actual history of the immigration process in Australia. In regard to the Jordanians surveyed, I will examine the history of their migration, their settlement, their adjustment to a new way of life, and their relationship with their home country. Additionally, I will focus in this study on cultural factors, such as the arrival of various groups from different origins (religious and national) Australian witnessed, and their role in integration stages, as well as the sub-processes of structural and cultural integration. So the social relations usually undergo a process of formation in which they tend to establish some kind of pattern within each social system. Additionally, the cultural part is composed of the ideal patterns of behaviour to which people are oriented; while the social organization aspect of the social structure is conceived as actual behaviour of people. These social and cultural patterns make it possible for the members of each system to communicate and be able to expect the behaviour of others, especially when their position in the social structure is known. This implies to great extent that a social system is structured in a way where by the lines of communication are clear; and the roles are socially and culturally identified and defined. This seems to be crucial to any system or group. So this study will consider for three questions:

  • 1- Intergeneration relationship within Jordanian families
  • 2- the relationship between Jordanian and Arab people from other countries
  • 3- the relationship between Jordanian and homeland.
