Call for presenters
HSS needs presenters over the next few months! It doesn't matter if you are just beginning or near completion of your masters, PhD or DCA, the HSS seminar group is a great place to present some of your research. You can try out a conference paper, polish a section of your work, try out a new approach, go over a possible publishable article - just email Andrew Booth with an idea and, if you can, nominate a month you think might work well for you.

Location: Room 2.644 (Broadway Building 2. Level 6)
Heidi Norman - Possibilities and limits of Indigenous self-determination under the NSW Aboriginal Land Rights Act 1983
In 1983 the Aboriginal Land Rights Act was passed. The ALRA legislation repealed the assimilationist Aborigines Act 1969 and established the three-tier land council, network mechanism for land recovery and enterprise. At the time it was said that it would achieve self-determination. This paper will examine the possibilities and limits of self-determination for the NSW Aboriginal community through the ALRA in its inital years of operations (1983-1989).
Please remember: ALL POST-GRADS WELCOME. If you are a new student - this is an effective and enjoyable way of meeting other post-grads, if you've been around for a while, it's a great way of seeing that there truly is a world on the other side of your computer.
PLEASE RSVP. There is a paper to read - copies will be available, details on RSVP.
We will also have an opportunity to thank the outgoing Convenor, Ann Penhallurick, for her outstanding contribution.

Trip to the East Indian Himalaya, with Kerry Little
Please RSVP for catering purposes, AND to receive a copy of advance reading (which looks good!)
Abstract of Kerry's presentation: The Lepchas are the indigenous people of the East Indian Himalaya. In a recent trip to Dzongu, a Lepcha Reservation in North Sikkim, to record folk stories, Kerry Little witnessed a threat to the Lepchas’ sacred landscape- a threat that will be devastating to their language, culture and way of life; the construction of seven mega-hydro-electric projects in the Lepcha Reservation in North Sikkim. She met with young Lepcha activists who, when faced with such an imminent threat to their tradition, are fighting to preserve it. This presentation of early PhD work explores the Lepcha’s connection to nature and the role of activism in preserving traditional Lepcha culture.
Kerry is enrolled in non-traditional PhD at UTS. She is recording Lepcha folktales and exploring how, or if, passing the stories to each generation helps Lepchas connect with their traditional culture.

Unity in Diversity: Visual media at grassroots level in Papua New Guinea: Presented by Verena Thomas
Our new Assoc. Dean (Research) Management and Admin. will pop in to share a few words of wisdom and to meet and greet.
There'll be wine and nibbles - AND a terrific presentation.
Abstract:
While community radio has proofed to be a successful model in Papua New
Guinea, other forms of media remain centralised and not representative of
the many cultural perspectives in this diverse country. This paper addresses
questions of media, identity, cultural representation, fragmentation and
models for the future.
Verena Thomas is enrolled in a Doctor of Creative Arts at UTS. She has a strong background in media production and as a filmmaker has recently completed the one-hour documentary 'Papa Bilong Chimbu', a personal account on the work and life of her great-uncle John Nilles, a missionary in the highlands of Papua New Guinea. As part of her Doctorate she is currently organising a community-based media project in the highlands of PNG.
