Many of Australia’s top journalists were educated at UTS, a leader in journalism education. Some, like ABC radio journalist Alice Brennan, who won the 2004 Andrew Olle Scholarship, are just starting out. Over the last three decades, we have developed an undergraduate program that includes combined degrees with law and international studies, and a strong postgraduate program for people who already have a degree or are experienced journalists. We have growing honours and research degree programs, which include innovative and in depth journalism projects.
UTS journalism includes streams in print, radio, television, online journalism and investigative journalism. From day one, our students begin producing stories and developing their portfolios through work experience and by publishing in our online magazine Reportage, our two community newspapers, The Point and Southside News, our specialist publications Festival News (produced daily during the Sydney Writers’ Festival) and Book News, and by researching and reporting for Australia’s largest community radio station, 2SER.

Recently, lecturer Chris Conlon and On Line Journalism 1 students produced Mining Australia 2004, an ezine project produced collaboratively with the Mineral Policy Institute and UTS Shopfront.
Our staff are all experienced professionals, most of whom continue to practice and all of whom are involved in research. Students and staff are involved in the work of the Australian Centre for Independent Journalism which hosts the annual PR2K conference and the George Munster forums. Our research focuses on issues concerning media, culture and identity, coverage of international issues, media history, journalism ethics, professional practice and investigative journalism. This year, the ACIJ published Adjunct Professor Peter Manning's 'Dog-Whistle Politics' and Journalism: Reporting Arabic and Muslim People in Sydney Newspapers' a study that examines representations of Arabic and Muslim people in Sydney newspapers over a two year period.
