HSS Postgrad Reading Group

The HSS PG group is a student run monthly forum for all HSS research post grads. We read background papers, listen to and sometimes wrestle with each other's work. It's a fabulous venue for emerging researchers, creative writers and thinkers to pummel their work into the beginnings of a shape and present before a sympathetic audience. Over the past few years HSS PG has helped numerous students sound out chapters, conference papers, ideas and ways of putting their argument.

The Research Students Conference Fund Committee on a competitive basis using the guidelines and a point scoring system allocates the funds. Cross Disciplinary Postgraduate Student Conference

The conference is an interdisciplinary event, held annually, and aimed at developing and promoting the direct participation of postgraduate research students in an academic conference environment by presenting a paper on their area of research interest. The purpose of the conference is multi-faceted. A conference of this type allows postgraduate students who may be in the early stages of their research to develop their study and presentation skills. It also gives them an opportunity to present a paper in a non-judgemental, supportive and friendly environment where confidence can be built. Finally, it provides a space for postgraduate researchers to develop and engage in interdisciplinary discussion, to develop mutual support networks and to stimulate academic discussion.

STAR

STAR (Skills to Advance Your Research) is a web-based resource that has been designed to support postgraduate research students. It aims to help students to develop skills needed for research and writing of the thesis and other associated scholarly work. It provides access both to resources that students can use on a self-help basis to develop a particular skill or know-how, and to places or people who can help in gaining the know-how. Some of these resources are available in print, some online, and some are face to face workshops. It should be remembered that the resources available are intended to complement the advice received from supervisors, not to replace their advice and guidance.
