Why study at UTS: Communication?
What makes studying communication at UTS better than at another university? We think there are six deciding reasons for choosing UTS to study communication. They are:
Industry reputation
The industry reputation of our communication courses are second to none because of the mix of theoretical and practical, the support we give to our students and the quality of our teaching staff.
Teaching Staff
We employ teaching staff with strong professional experience in their field and good teaching abilities who are approachable and want you to produce good work. Our staff have a long reputation for innovative teaching and research.
Emphasis on professional practice
All our courses emphasise professional practice. Depending on your course, you could be covering a story, writing for one of our publications or radio 2SER, behind a camera, producing a film, and creating on-line articles (check out our publications section to see the outcome). As part of your degree, you could also be in an organisation on a professional placement or project or working collaboratively with industry. See the different program areas for more details.
Resources available to students
We have cutting-edge production facilities, equipment, and software which production students can use. There are also new media and computing facilities that are only available to Communication students. General computing facilities - such as email, word-processing, internet, printing - are located throughout the UTS campus. These are accessible to all current UTS students.
Production students have access to advanced production equipment and facilities for film, video, sound and new media production. These include a purpose built sound and radio facility, AVID editing/post production suites for film and video, and computing facilities with relevant new media software such as Flash, Photoshop and After Effects. Students are able to access equipment from the Media Store, including video cameras, sound recorders, 16 mm cameras, portable lighting and other accessories.
The audio facilities include three major production control rooms, equipped variously to specialise in Music/Audio Arts, Post Production and 5.1 Film Mix. There are also six production workstations located in separate suites and a radio broadcast studio. All studios and production rooms are equipped with the latest version of the ProTools software.
Combined degree with international studies or with law
A Communication degree can be combined with International studies or with law. The combined degree with International Studies means that students can learn about another culture, country and language and study overseas and have it count towards a combined degree. The combined degree with Law offers students the benefits of both a law degree and a communication degree. The combined degree offers graduates greater job opportunities and employment choices.
Central location of UTS
The communication courses are held at the Broadway campus of UTS, which is located on the edge of the commercial centre of Sydney , in easy walking distance of Central railway and bus stations
